| There are many popular gun dogs used in modern times; They are specialized for every aspect of the hunt and the type of territory the hunt is held on. Of all the hunting breeds, the spaniels are the oldest. The record keeping of modern times can tell us who is related to whom, but cannot tell us much about the history of the dogs in our modern kennels. Whatever the true background of the spaniel, in 1387 Count Gaston de Foix described a spaniel that worked by quartering in front of the hunter, and then flushed game either for the falcon or the hound. He also described how they retrieved ducks and geese from the water. Aldrovandrus in 1637 described a 'Spaniel dog with floppy ears, the chest, belly, and feet white, picked out with black, the rest of the body black.' English Springers are even-tempered, gentle, friendly, and sociable dogs that are great for kids. Intelligent, skillful, willing and obedient. Playful, energetic and a quick learner. Merry, brave and sweet tail-waggers. Cheerful and courageous. It is affectionate, good natured and sincere, this dog loves everyone. Springers do best when they are with people who can provide them with some kind of consistent structure where the rules are made clear. They can get into trouble with meek owners and or owners who do not provide daily mental and physical exercise, becoming destructive and barking a lot if left alone. They love water and may constantly get themselves wet and muddy. Usually they are good with other pets with the possible exception of birds. Sometimes argumentative with other dogs if owners do not communicate clearly who is in charge. Springers need wise guidance through what is called their "teenage" time. Some are high-energy and they are all intelligent. They need a soft, but firm hand so they always know who is in control. There are two types of Springers - field and bench. The field type are bred for hunting and field trial work. They tend to have more white coat than the bench type, much less hair, and are more high energy. The bench type are bred for conformation shows and have more liver or black than white, they have much more coat, but are usually calmer. |
The Springer Spaniel gets its name from his method of flushing game: he springs forward to drive birds out of hiding. This breed hunts well both on land and water and is good at work in brush. He also is a fine retriever. The English Springer Spaniel's merry, gentle personality makes him an ideal family dog. His talents are hunting, tracking, retrieving, watchdog, agility, competitive obedience, and performing tricks.
The coat comes in black or liver (dark brown) with white markings or predominantly white with black or liver markings; Blue or liver roan; Tricolor: black and white or liver and white with tan markings, usually found on eyebrows, cheeks, inside of ears and under the tail. Any white portion of the coat may be flecked with ticking.
Our goal at MandSSpringerskc is to produce loving, healthy companions with great pedigrees, personalities, versatility, and conformation for any household and are careful when placing our puppies into loving homes. Our puppies are raised in our home, we don't have a kennel and before our puppies are placed they have a good start on potty training. All puppies are current on vaccinations, dew claws removed, and tails are docked by our Veterinarian. Foremost, our springers are family members. We don't sell to breeders with kennels. We feel this will be at least a 12-15 year relationship. We keep in touch with our puppies' forever homes and love receiving pictures and stories on how they are doing. Check out our past puppies in the Photo Center located in the Things To Do Link and in our Extended Family Page.
During the warm months you will see us at the dog park. Weather permitting, our springers are swimming in the lake.
We do have a contract we require all our buyers to sign, which outlines our health guarantee and has information for your new family member. My email address is mandsspringerskc@gmail.com Feel free to call me for information 913-707-3927
